TAKE ME HOME ON A PUSHBIKE

My friend and sometimes collaborator Natalie Nourigat had her first full-length book released this week, a collection of her online autobio comic Between Gears.

I thoroughly endorse this publication--so much so, I appear on the back cover. Literally.

If that's not enough to entice you, then listen to Natalie talk about the book over at iFanboy.

Between Gears TP (MR)By: Natalie NourigatPrice: $19.99Diamond ID: DEC110481
ISBN: 9781607065043
This honest, autobiographical account of a college senior's life will transport you to the land of Jell-O shots, term papers, job interviews, road trips, and sanguine optimism in the face of uncertainty and change. Trade paperback collects the comic in its entirety, with 30 pages of new material!

Between Gears is published by Image Comics, who also published our short story in This Is A Souvenir: The Songs Of Spearmint & Shirley Lee.

Our next books, both as a team and for her as a solo artist, will be published by Oni Press (not counting her work-for-hire assignment for Graphic Universe). In other words, expect to hear a lot more about this talented young cartoonist very soon!

So, buy Between Gears now and tell all your friends how much cooler you are than them when they finally figure out that Natalie is awesome.

BUT I'LL FORGET MYSELF

NEW TO THEATRES...

Wanderlust, the new one from David Wain, with a script co-written by Ken Marino and featuring the always pleasant Paul Rudd. Funny enough, if not a gut buster.

UPDATED TO CRITERION CONFESSIONS...

* La Jetee/Sans Soleil, a double-bill from Chris Marker now on Blu-Ray. (Also at DVD Talk)

* Three Outlaw Samurai, a rollicking samurai adventure from 1964, directed by Hideo Gosha.

* Tiny Furniture, the debut from Lena Dunham. Er, uh...well, not even Criterion can win them all.

THIS WEEK IN DVD/BD REVIEWS...

* Automobile / L'Automobile, an inconsistent drama notable for being one of Anna Magnani's last roles.

* The Hour, a BBC miniseries centered around a television news program in the 1950s. With Ben Whishaw and Dominic West.

* Lady and the Tramp: Diamond Edition, one of Disney's best is back and looking better than ever.

* Notorious, one of my favorite Hitchock films gets a high-def upgrade. Starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.

* On the Bowery: The Films of Lionel Rogosin, vol. 1, featuring Rogosin's seminal documentary and two other efforts from the pioneering independent director.

* Shakespeare in Love, the Tom Stoppard-penned star turn for Gwyneth Paltrow.

* A Soldier's Story, an antiquated race drama from Norman Jewison, with a young Denzel in a supporting role.

I really like this illustration some one did of the female lead from The Hour, but can't find any credits or any other similar portraits. If you know, can you leave a comment or drop a line?

Current Soundtrack: fun., Some Nights

THE VALENTINE TAPES

Today is apparently some kind of holiday. I mean, is it one besides my cat's birthday, or are you all celebrating the fact that Sadie's 14? Because, if so...d'awwwwww, how sweet.

To mark the occasion, the fine folks over at Four Star Studios have released a new issue of their digital anthology Double Feature. This month's theme? Romance Comics!

So, for a mere $0.99 cents, you can get two short stories about love. One is by J. Torres and Evan "Doc" Shaner, and the other is by myself and the talented Megan Levens (with lettering by Crank!).

"Two Wheels, Two Feet" has been a long time coming, and I am glad to see it out at last. You can get it as a pdf from the website, or grab the Double Feature iPad app and purchase the story through there. Look for the Double Feature Romance Special, that's the one you want!

Here is another look at the cover Megan did for our story. Isn't it something?

These are the sketches she did when designing the image.

And these are the character sketches Megan did before starting the story:

I love Double Feature. It's the best kind of DIY comics: the original artists invented the delivery platform, and now they are supporting genres that don't normally get attention in mainstream comics while also giving the creators control and a clear financial stake in the material.

Current Soundtrack: Tennis, Young and Old - currently only $3.99!
