YES! YOU TALK TOO FAST

Just a quick note.

An interview, a sort of "no-update update," I did with Chris Arrant went live on Newsarama yesterday. You can read it here.

I'd have posted it yesterday, but I wanted to give John Updike the top of the page for the day.

NEW ART FOR THE PEOPLE

Taking stock for 2009:

- TO SEE THE LIGHTS (a.k.a. the Love the Way You Love YA novel) is about halfway to completion with a current count of 33,000 words. I alternate between liking it and not knowing what the hell I feel.

- JAMIE S. RICH'S 5 1/2 is on hold while I work on the above.

- LYING DOWN, the comics series with Mike Holmes, is still in limbo. Need to make a decision soon.

- SPELL CHECKERS, the graphic novel series with Joëlle Jones and Nicholas Hitori de looks to have a publisher, and I am very excited about that. If you recall, Nico leaked some art, which got things rolling.

- YOU HAVE KILLED ME is so very close to being done. Joëlle has been cranking, and it looks awesome.

- BP & MJ is in limbo. So is THIS WORLD AND BODY. I'd really like to have something definite for them ASAP, and in the order of their listing, but sadly the world works on its own timetable, not mine.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR HOMEWORK

This has been kind of an inventory week. I hadn't been very happy with my writing on 5 1/2 for the last couple of weeks, so I took the week off from doing new work to assess what I had in hand.

First I read over the entire six scripts/chapters of my comic with Mike Holmes, Lying Down, to double-check and see if they needed in tightening. A little was required, but I mainly was able to pick-up different threads that, now that I have the whole thing constructed, could be worked through the story, particularly different objects that will connect people and events. I liked the scripts quite a bit and am actually impressed with myself for writing an action sequence involving cars. That's something I'd never really done before.

Mike and I hope to have a publisher nailed down soon.

Then, today I read over what I have for Jamie S. Rich's 5 1/2, and I'm feeling much better about it now. I actually really like the first section, tentatively titled "I am the Resurrection," and I was happy to get to the end of where I am at in Part II and realize I knew what the next scene should be, which I could not have said when I picked the manuscript up this morning.

Current word count is 41,400. I think there was some glitch when my computer last did a tally, as in between I realized that what I had vs. what I had posted was not the same. Ooops. Stupid Macbook.

WHAT ABOUT THE TIME OF THE FANCY DRESS?

More sketches for Lying Down. Mr. Mike Holmes playing around with some fashion options.

Also, Kelley Seda has her own blog now. And she mentions me. She's drawing a story I wrote for the same anthology I'm working on with Natalie.

Jealous? I knew you would be.

THEY CAPTURED WHAT SEEMED UNKNOWING AND CANDID, BUT THEY SUSPECTED IT WAS FALSE

Yesterday was productive. I wrote the entirety of Lying Down #5. I kept telling myself I was going to stop and pick it up the next day, but the dominoes kept landing one in front of the other.

I started the script using a grid structure that allowed for a particular sequence to be embedded in another sequence, another something I thought I would stop at some point, but it kept going and before I knew it this technique ran through the entire script. At times, I wrote both elements together, and then in the middle, I wrote the sidebar on its own before backtracking and filling in the main story all the way to the end. This left about half of the experiment to polish off as the last work to do.

This here is a scan of the notes I did to plan out those pages, sequenced here as their matching double-page spreads, pages 16-23.

lying down notes

I don't know if Mike Holmes is going to love me or hate me with this.

Writing Lying Down has been a challenge at times. I had a lot of days where I felt I was in over my head, tackling something I was not capable of, followed by bouts of self-confidence and elation. Yesterday ended in elation.

I've been experimenting with the structure of this one a lot, writing each issue as individual units, like shuffled pieces of the larger whole. Then, within each of those units, more pieces, more shuffling. It continues, in some sense, structural techniques I began in 12 Reasons Why I Love Her and that have been cropping up in my work ever since, including in "Reverberation," the story for Popgun, vol. 2. Not being so linear allows me to control how information is released to the audience and thus manipulate perceptions. What you know when and how you know it can make a huge difference. Thematically, this makes sense in Lying Down, which is about deception and how one presents oneself to others. It's also about con men.

Today, we start the last issue.

AIN'T NO LOVE IN THE HEART OF SNAP CITY

Looks like the script I was struggling over the last couple of weeks has been accepted. They went for version 3. So, now I'm willing to say that it's actually for this anthology, Portland Noir edited by Kevin Sampsell. Crime tales set in different Portland neighborhoods. It seems only fitting that a Portland anthology would have a comic book story, and mine even has cartoonists in it.

I've been spending my time otherwise working mainly on the comic book I am doing with Mike Holmes, and I wrote early scripts for the third and fourth issues last week. It looks like it will be six issues, and I am working on notes for the finale now. No ETA or publisher as of yet. It is also a crime book, though with a much different, classic Hollywood tone--not like You Have Killed Me, though. Like Denise Richards, it's complicated. It's called Lying Down.

You can, however, go to your comics shop this Wednesday and purchase Madman Atomic Comics #9.

This is the issue made up entirely of double-page spreads, and if you laid them each end to end, they would form one continuous background with the characters in constant motion, moving from the first page all the way to the last. In film terms, it's one tracking shot. Prepare to be impressed.
